Oh, Leno, Magical Leno!! I can hear you now ... "What the heck is 'Leno'?" Leno is a weave structure that pulls the warp threads out of the straight path they normally follow. It twists one warp thread over a warp thread to either the right or left and the weft thread holds it there. Then the warp thread goes back to its normal position for a pick before it is once again twisted out of place.
Years ago leno was woven using special heddles on the loom to manipulate the warp threads. Another way is to thread two warp threads through a bead. The bead will pull one thread out of its normal position. Here is more information on 'bead leno'.
The picture on the left shows the weave structure up close. This is a sample I wove out of cotton. The cotton shows the weave structure better. The handwoven scarves listed below are made from tencel. The tencel makes a beautiful soft fabric that drapes well and is shiny like silk.

I weave three different designs of Leno Scarves. The first design has equal size blocks of leno woven areas and a modified 'basket' weave. When the blocks are woven this size, the scarves have more of a overall texture than a visible design in the fabric.

The next design of Leno Scarves has longer blocks of leno woven areas and the same modified 'basket' weave. The longer blocks show off the weave structures in a pattern that can be easily seen. The tencel yarn used for this lovely handwoven scarf is very shiny and the fabric is soft and drapes well. What a classy scarf..

The dimension of each handwoven Leno scarf is approximately 6 1/2" x 62 1/2". This measurement includes the fringe. I will have the actual dimension of each scarf on the pages devoted to each of the leno designs.
