Handwoven Scarves, Leno - $54.00
Oh, Leno, Magical Leno!!
I can hear you now... "What the heck is 'Leno'?" Leno is a weave structure that pulls the warp threads out of the straight path woven threads normally follow. It twists one warp thread in a group over a warp thread to either the right or left and the weft holds it there. Then the twisted warp thread goes back to its normal position for a pick before it is once again twisted out of place.
Available Handwoven Scarves, Leno
Years ago leno was woven using special heddles on the loom to manipulate the warp threads. Another way is to thread two warp threads through a bead. The bead will pull one thread out of its normal position. Here is more information on 'bead leno'.
The picture on the left shows the weave structure up close. The top section is "all leno" and the bottom portion shows the leno blocks next to the basket weave area. This is a sample I wove out of cotton to show the weave structure better. The handwoven scarves listed above are made from tencel. The tencel makes a beautiful soft fabric that drapes well and is shiny like silk.
I have five different designs of Leno Scarves. The first four designs are made up of blocks of leno woven areas and areas of modified 'basket' weave. The difference in the four of the designs is the length of the blocks. The longer the blocks the more distinct they become. The fifth design is woven completely as Leno. It looks more like a crocheted scarf than a handwoven one.
