Close up of silk scarvesThese handwoven silk scarves are made from 100% silk thread. The warp is a natural ivory color and the colored scarves are woven with various shades of dyed silk. There are 60 threads in every inch both in the warp and weft. To weave each scarf I threw the shuttle back and forth over 4,000 times.

Each of these silk scarves were woven using designs from a pattern book published in Germany in 1677.  Marx Ziegler's, "Weber Kunst und Bild Buch - The Weavers-Art and Tie-up Book", is the first known book published on weaving.  Until its publication the Weaving Guilds guarded the secrets of their trade closely and I am sure many weavers were not happy to see those secrets written in a book for all to see.
